Im Rahmen der Diskussion um den Hasselbachplatz und dessen studentisches Leben haben wir uns mit folgender Pressemitteilung am 02.04.2012 geäußert.
Hassel — Anzugspunkt für Studierende!?
Jeden Abend zuhause sitzen? Mit den MitbewohnerInnen das Gespräch von gestern Abend wieder aufwärmen? Mit den KommilitonInnen schon wieder über das Studium und die DozentInnen reden? Weil es hier so langweilig ist, nach Hause oder Berlin fahren? Soll das die Lebenswelt der Studierenden sein?
Wir sagen NEIN! Denn wofür gibt es Kneipen, Bars, Clubs, Konzerte, Freiflächen, leere Häuser und so viel mehr? Orte an denen man Menschen treffen, neue Freunde finden, anderes erleben und sich vielleicht auch verlieben kann. Diese Möglichkeiten machen eine Stadt insbesondere für junge Menschen attraktiv, machen aus dem günstigen Studienort, der Hochschule die einen angenommen hat, für einen selbst einen sozialen Aktionsraum. Nur so kann lokale Verbundenheit, Engagement für die Gesellschaft und ein positiver Eindruck der nach außen getragen wird, erzeugt werden. Das ist aber nicht möglich, wenn es Studierenden nur noch erlaubt ist, leise mit teurem Bier in austauschbaren Kneipen zu sitzen, sich darüber zu beschweren wie grau, trist und langweilig Magdeburg ist. Was bleibt, ist dann nur die Hoffnung der Jugend, hier bald wieder weg zu kommen.
Denn Fakt ist, dass Magdeburg für viele Studierende nur Zweit- oder Drittwunsch im Hinblick auf die Wahl ihres Studienortes ist. Fakt ist aber auch, dass vielen Studierenden die Stadt und mit ihr nicht zuletzt der Hasselbachplatz ans Herz gewachsen ist. Es gibt hier eben doch mehr als Plattenbauten, eine Uni und Otto. Wird sich die Situation für die Kulturschaffenden und VeranstaltungsmacherInnen des Hasselbachplatzes nicht ändern, so nimmt man der Stadt ihr Potential und ihre Attraktivität. Die Stadt sollte Wege suchen, (kulturelle) Veranstaltungen von der Jugend für die Jugend zu fördern und auszubauen, statt sie mit Verboten zu belegen.
Der Studierendenrat der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg unterstützt die Kampagne Hassel.Leben, weil genau das nicht in unserem Interesse ist. 20.000 Studierende sind eingetaucht in das soziale und kulturelle Leben der Stadt, viele haben selbst dazu beigetragen, dass wir und die BürgerInnen sich hier wohl fühlen, dass KommilitonInnen in der Heimat positiv von Magdeburg sprechen. Verbote von Veranstaltungen an und um den Hassel sind ein großer Schritt der Stadt, genau das wieder zu zerstören. Wir denken, dass nach dem Riff und dem Café Central weitere Locations folgen werden. Wir müssen uns bewusst sein: Wenn die Jugend weg bleibt, bleiben Überalterung und leere Kassen in unserer Stadt und den Hochschulen. Ist es das, was wir wollen?

Hassel – Attraction for students?
Sitting at home each night? Warming up yesterday’s conversation with the flat mates? Talking about uni and lecturers again? Going home or to Berlin, because it’s so boring here? Is it that what the student’s world is supposed to be like?
We Say NO! Well what are pubs, bars, clubs, concerts, open spaces, empty buildings etc. there for? Places where you can meet people, find new friends, experience other stuff and maybe even fall in love. These possibilities are, what makes a city attractive, esp. for young people, what make a cheap study destination Magdeburg a social room of action. Only that way a local unity, commitment for the society and a positive outward-appearance can be achieved. But that is not possible if students are only allowed to sit quietly in replaceable bars with expensive beer, to moan about how grey, dull, and boring Magdeburg is. What remains are only the hopes of the youth to leave as soon as possible.
It’s a fact that Magdeburg is only 2nd or 3rd choice for many students when they choose their place to study. But it’s also a fact that the city and with it the Hasselbachplatz has grown dear to them. There is in fact more to the city than high-rise buildings, a uni and Otto. If the situation for the ones creating culture and hosting events at the Hasselbachplatz doesn’t change, the city will be deprived of its potential and attractiveness. The city should look for ways to promote (cultural) events from the youth for the youth by expanding it rather than imposing prohibitions.
The Student’s Council of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg supports the campaign Hassel.Leben because the explained above is exactly what we do not want. 20.000 students are active in the social and cultural life of the city. Many have contributed for the citizens to feel at ease here and that our fellow students speak positively about Magdeburg when they’re at home. Prohibiting events at the Hassel is a step towards destroying all that. We think others will follow the Riff and the Café Central. We have to bear in mind: when the youth stays away obsolescence and empty pockets in our city and the universities. Is it that what we want?
